Why reading can help your mental health

Book worms out there you may already be aware of this but for those that have never prioritised time for reading I wanted to share the below with you as reading is one of the best and relatively cheap ways of giving yourself self care and can aid to alleviate anxious / depressive thoughts:

📕 Reading fiction can allow you to temporarily escape your own world and become swept up in the world of the characters. Nonfiction fills your head with knowledge and stimulates your brain function ( busy minds don’t have time to worry!)

📗 Depression can make us feel isolated and estranged from everyone ( Similar to current isolation circumstances). Getting lost in a god book can lessen those feelings

📘 Reading has been shown to put our brains into a state similar to meditation, and it brings the same health benefits of deep relaxation and inner calm. Regular readers sleep better, have lower stress levels and higher self-esteem than non-readers

📙 Brain stimulating activities, like reading, have been shown to ward off mental decline and conditions such as dementia and even Alzheimer’s. One study found that people who read later in life have a 32% lower rate of declining mental abilities
